La Fonda on Main

Last night August and I celebrated our year and a half anniversary.  Yep, that’s right, we’re the kind of people that don’t just celebrate yearly anniversaries but also 6 month anniversaries.  And if we’re being honest, during our first year we occasionally celebrated monthly.  Yep, we’re one of those couples.  Anyways, we decided to venture downtown to try a new to me Mexican restaurant, La Fonda on Main, that’s supposed to be one of the best in San Antonio.  And given that San Antonio has over 800 Mexican restaurants that’s really saying something.

We even sported our matching Sperry’s for the very special occasion.  Not only are we the couple that celebrates our relationship monthly but we also like to match.

Of course we started out with chips and salsa, because really, what’s a Mexican restaurant if they don’t start you out with complimentary chips and salsa?

The salsa had a few too many tomato chunks in it for my liking, but then again I’m probably the only person who prefers their salsa with less tomato.  We also ordered the chile con queso as an appetizer because I just can’t seem to go to a Mexican restaurant without sampling the queso.

It was good, but didn’t quite compare to my favorite Mexican queso from my hometown Rio Grande.  Not sure I’ll ever find queso that I like as much as theirs though.  For our entre we opted to share the shrimp, chicken, and beef fajita plate.

These fajitas were so good.  August and I almost always order the fajitas no matter what Mexican restaurant we’re at (and we’ve been to quite a few living in Mexico San Antonio) but I’d say these were the best we’ve had yet.  We both agreed that the beef was our favorite.  And we ended our date night with coffee ice cream that had a little Kahlua poured over top.

I only ate a few bites because I didn’t think I’d like the coffee flavor (since I’ve never drank coffee) but it was surprisingly good and August pretty much licked the bowl clean.

Overall a very good meal to celebrate our one year and six months of dating.
